HYPE Tokenomics
Many DEX tokens are mainly governance tokens. HYPE has a different set of jobs: it secures the chain through staking, it sets fee discounts, it is the bond that market and stablecoin deployers post, and it is what the protocol's fees are converted into. If you run a market on Hyperliquid, you will interact with all of these.
The Basics
HYPE is the native token of the Hyperliquid L1. Total supply at genesis (November 2024): 1 billion tokens. The published allocation (Decrypt, reporting the Hyper Foundation's figures):
- 31% — Genesis distribution to users (the airdrop)
- 38.888% — Future emissions and community rewards
- 23.8% — Current and future core contributors (locked, with multi-year vesting)
- 6.0% — Hyper Foundation budget
- 0.3% — Community grants
- 0.012% — HIP-2 (Hyperliquidity)
No allocation was made to private investors, centralized exchanges or market makers. The largest single share went to users at genesis.
Where Trading Fees Go
Hyperliquid's docs state that trading fees go entirely to the community: HLP, the assistance fund, and deployers (Fees). Spot and HIP-3 deployers may keep up to 50% of the fees their markets generate.
The assistance fund (system address 0xfefe…fefe) converts trading fees to HYPE automatically as part of L1 execution. HYPE held by the assistance fund is treated as burned — removed from circulating and total supply.
This is live, on-chain and verifiable: you can watch the assistance fund's balance through the public API. Note what it is not: fees are not paid out to HYPE stakers.
Staking
HYPE is staked (delegated) to validators within HyperCore (Staking):
- Rewards come from the future emissions reserve, not from trading fees
- The reward rate is inversely proportional to the square root of total HYPE staked — about 2.37% per year at 400M HYPE staked
- Validators may charge a commission; delegations have a 1-day lockup, and moving HYPE from staking back to spot takes a 7-day unstaking queue
Staking also has uses beyond rewards:
- Fee discounts: staking tiers from >10 HYPE (5% off) to >500,000 HYPE (40% off) (Fees)
- Validators: 10,000 HYPE self-delegation to become active
- HIP-3 deployers: 500,000 HYPE staked, slashable by validator vote for malicious or irregular market operation, and kept for at least 183 days after the DEX is deployed (HIP-3)
How the Pieces Connect
Here's the mechanism, step by step:
- Traders trade → fees generated
- Part of the fees → HLP and market deployers
- The rest → the assistance fund, which converts it to HYPE on-chain
- HYPE in the assistance fund → burned
- Separately, stakers earn emissions and validators secure the chain; deployers stake HYPE as a bond for their markets
The burn means trading activity reduces HYPE supply. How that interacts with emissions, vesting unlocks and demand is a market question that this course doesn't try to answer.
Why This Matters to Operators
For a HIP-3 deployer, HYPE is less an investment than a bond and a cost of doing business:
- Your 500k HYPE stake is at risk if your oracle or market operation is irregular — slashed stake is burned, not paid to affected users
- Your users' fee discounts depend on how much HYPE they stake
- The protocol's share of your market's fees flows into the same assistance-fund burn as every other market
Understanding these flows is what lets you price your fee share and reason about your own risk. In the next lesson we'll look at HLP, the protocol's own market-making vault.
