Validators & Staking
The Validator Network
Hyperliquid's security depends on its validator set. Validators perform three critical functions:
- Block Production — Proposing new blocks containing user transactions
- Consensus Voting — Voting to commit blocks through HyperBFT
- State Execution — Processing all orders, matches, and liquidations
They also publish oracle prices and vote on certain protocol matters, such as delistings and HIP-3 deployer slashing.
HYPE Staking
HYPE is the native token of the Hyperliquid L1. Staking happens inside HyperCore: HYPE moves between a spot account and a staking account.
Staking for Security
- Validators must self-delegate HYPE to participate in consensus
- Any holder can delegate HYPE to validators to earn rewards
- Staking rewards come from the future emissions reserve. The reward rate is inversely proportional to the square root of total HYPE staked (about 2.37% per year at 400M HYPE staked, per the staking docs)
- The more HYPE staked, the more economically secure the network
Staking Mechanics
- Delegation — Any HYPE holder can delegate; each delegation has a 1-day lockup
- Unstaking Queue — Moving HYPE from the staking account back to spot takes 7 days
- Jailing and Slashing — Validators that respond too slowly can be jailed by a quorum vote and stop earning rewards. Slashing is reserved for provably malicious behavior such as double-signing; as of October 2026 there is no automatic slashing
- Commission — Validators charge a commission on rewards earned by their delegators, and cannot raise it above 1%
Validator Requirements
Running a Hyperliquid validator requires:
- Hardware — High-performance servers with low-latency networking
- Minimum Stake — 10,000 HYPE of self-delegation, locked for one year
- Responsiveness — Consistent, low-latency participation in consensus to avoid jailing
- Geographic Distribution — The network benefits from validators in different regions
The Active Set
Running a validator node is permissionless, and the active set is the top 27 validators by stake (docs). As of October 2026, the public info API (validatorSummaries) listed 35 registered validators, 27 of them active. The validator set and stakes are fixed for each staking epoch of 100k rounds (about 90 minutes).
Hyperliquid started with a smaller, foundation-heavy validator set and has expanded over time. Each additional validator means more votes to collect and more network links, so growing the set has to be balanced against latency.
Liquid Staking
Projects such as Kinetiq offer liquid staking for HYPE, issuing tokens (for example kHYPE) that represent staked HYPE. These let holders use a claim on staked HYPE as collateral in HyperEVM protocols, at the cost of added smart contract and operator risk.
